St. Anthony Catholic Community continues the mission of Jesus through the religious education of children and youth. With the Holy Spirit, we are all Disciples of Christ participating in the same lifelong journey to the creator. Assisting parents in their primary role as faith educators, we create an environment in which all ages can grow in understanding and love of God through prayer, service and liturgy.

General Information regarding the Elementary Program

Our parish students will use “Finding God” curriculum from Loyola Press. This series is designed to invite children and the adults who care for them to enter into a deeper relationship with God. Inspired by the life and work of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, Finding God encourages all to realize the presence of God in their experiences of God’s creation and in their lives as people for others.

Each Faith Formation student will be given a book to use throughout the year. Our Catechists (teachers) are dedicated volunteers who will give your children faithful presentation of the Church’s teaching. We will help stimulate your child’s religious imagination so they can learn to think more critically and become better prepared to proclaim and live their faith at home, at school and at play. It is our hope that children who come and participate on Sunday Mornings will find a community of caring believers here at St. Anthony, who will help them supplement the teachings they receive from their parents – the primary educators of the Faith.

The mass schedule allows families plenty of time to attend Mass before or after classes. All children and their families, and most especially second graders and older who are preparing to receive First Reconciliation and First Communion should spend time at Mass in order to embrace our faith fully. Once a student has received his or her First Communion, participation at Mass should become a weekly priority.

Nursery

The St. Anthony Parish Nursery offers childcare for children ages six months and up. It is open on Sunday during the 8:30 AM Mass, the 9:45 AM Religious Education hour and the 11:00 AM Mass. It can also be scheduled as needed for ministry needs, such as Vacation Bible School or Adult Faith Formation.

As the first teachers of our parish children, we strive to teach them the importance of being Christian through prayer at snack time, by reading Christian books, and through our actions and words. We offer a stable, nurturing staff to provide a safe and Christian environment for the children of our parish while their parents enjoy opportunities to grow in their faith.

The nursery has both trained staff and parish volunteers. Parents are asked to take turns helping in the nursery on a rotating basis.  Adult volunteers must fill out a background check form and attend the Called to Protect® training. See the Called to Protect Training for further details. Teens are welcome to volunteer as well.

To register for the Sunday morning nursery or to volunteer in the nursery, contact Cindy Marchese at (503)639-4179 x 121

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a special time for 1st-4th grade children to hear and discuss the readings in a child friendly environment during the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass. A leader, along with another adult, takes the children from the sanctuary to the Upper Room in the parish office prior to the first reading. Children return to the sanctuary as the offertory song begins. The goal is to help young children experience the liturgy of the word at a level they can understand and connect with. Leaders are people from the community who choose this ministry because they enjoy working with children and sharing their faith. Training and a clear easy-to-follow curriculum is provided.
