Confirmation is one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Through the sacrament of Confirmation, we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit and we confirm the sacrament of our baptism. At St. Anthony, adults (12th grade or older) may begin preparation for the sacrament at any time during the year. The article below describes the steps you will take. The first thing to do is to call and schedule an appointment with either Father John Henderson, our pastor, or Kathy Reilly, confirmation team member. You can reach Father at 503-639-4179 or firstname.lastname@example.org. You can reach Kathy at email@example.com.
Disciples Believe is a series of ten catechetical sessions. Candidates for Confirmation as well as adult Catholics wanting to enrich their faith come to the Disciples Believe sessions.
Disciples Believe is on Monday’s at 7 PM or Thursday’s at 9:30. Candidates for the sacraments need to come to one session on each of the ten topics. You can begin your sessions at any time. The dates of the various topics will be in the bulletin. The ten sessions include:
- The Trinity
- Salvation History and The Paschal Mystery
- The Mass
- The Bible and Tradition
- The Sacraments of Initiation
- The Sacraments of Healing and Vocation
- The Ten Commandments, Sin and Reconciliation
- The Creed
- The Church
- The Beatitudes & the Lord’s Prayer
You are asked to participate in two discernment interviews: The first interview will take place as soon as possible once you contact us and the second interview will happen sometime after your 5th or 6th session. The interviews will be with one or more of the Sacraments for Adults Team members.
Each candidate will be asked to do a service project of their choosing.
This means doing something for others (not family members) that you don’t get paid to do. We will talk more about this at your discernment interviews.
All Candidates for reception of the sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation will be asked to go to confession prior to receiving the sacraments. Preparation for confession will be part of the topics covered in the catechetical sessions.
You will also be asked to choose a sponsor. Your sponsor should be a practicing Catholic who has already been confirmed.
Your sponsor does not need to be married, but if they are married, they must be married in the Catholic Church. If your sponsor is not a member of St. Anthony, you will need a letter from their parish saying that they meet the qualifications to be a sponsor.
There is also a variety of paperwork that needs to be turned in. We will guide you on what is needed during the discernment interviews.
Each Candidate for a sacrament must also have a copy of their baptismal certificate. Even if you weren’t baptized in the Catholic Church, we still need a copy of your certificate.
If you are married, you should be married in the Catholic Church. If you are not married in the Church or if you are divorced, this is something that you will need to talk about with Father John. He will guide you in your next steps.
One of the things that you will be invited to do, is to choose the name of a saint to be your confirmation name. This is the name the Bishop will call you by when he confirms you.
