Eucharist (Communion)

The Eucharist–instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper–is at the core of our celebration each Mass. Jesus truly becomes the Body and Blood we receive (John 6: 51-58). At the Last Supper, sharing His Body and Blood with the disciples, Jesus said, “Do this in memory of me”–and so we do, through Holy Communion.

First Eucharist at St. Anthony for Children

Eucharist is the core of our Catholic faith. Baptized children receiving their First Eucharist are required to have sufficient knowledge combined with thoughtful preparation in order to truly understand the mystery of Christ according to their capacity. First Eucharist is celebrated as part of our Sunday liturgy during the Easter Season.

Eucharist is a faith community event and is celebrated after children celelbrate1st Reconciliation. The family is the core of our faith community, so sacramental preparation needs to take place in the home with the support of the Church. St. Anthony partners with the parents to help prepare children for the reception of this sacrament. Parents can feel confident that they are fulfilling their responsibilities in preparing their children for First Eucharist if they take the religious education of their children seriously while offering their personal witness of the Eucharistic presence of Jesus. Enthusiastic participation on a weekly basis is one of the best examples a parent can offer their first communicant.

For First Eucharist 2017, parent meeting is scheduled for:

  • Sunday, November 6, 2016, directly following the 8:30 Mass in Francis
    Hall (about 9:45-10:45 AM)

At the parent meetings, materials for preparing your child for his or her First Eucharist in the home are provided and explained.  Background regarding the Sacrament is presented.

All children preparing for their First Eucharist in 2017 should plan to attend our First Eucharist Retreat on

  • Friday, April 28th from 6:30-8:30 PM or
  • Saturday, April 29th from 9:30-11:30 a.m.

These are the only times this retreat is held!  Please mark your calendar and make plans for you and your child to attend one of these retreats.  Children & parents will visit various activity centers, attend a church tour and practice receiving bread and the chalice, and participate in a guided meditation prayer focused on the Eucharist.  Volunteer opportunities are available for parents who wish to take part in this special day with their children.

In 2016, we will celebrate First Eucharist as a parish community at the following Masses:
