Our curriculum at St. Anthony

 

ST. ANTHONY PRESCHOOL

  • 2nd grade reading buddies
  • 7th grade Mass friends
  • We offer a State Accredited Preschool for 4 and 5 year olds.  Students must be four at time of entry into the Preschool.  Any exceptions must be petitioned through the administration on a case-by-case basis.

ST. ANTHONY KINDERGARTEN

  • Daily Language work (phonics and pre-reading)

1ST GRADE

  • Reading – groups to practice reading books at individual reading level and support for readers to learn reading strategies
  • Word Study – students are provided with the opportunity to manipulate words in engaging activities and games
  • Literacy Centers – students get the opportunity to work independently, make choices, and be challenged.
  • Math games – a new skill is demonstrated and practiced, students apply the new skill while playing math games and using hands-on materials.
  • Science – reaching the many learning styles we include experiments, investigations, reading, and discussion into the science curriculum (units include apples, rainforest and ocean)

2ND GRADE

  • Cross-curricular penguins and dinosaur units

3RD GRADE

  • Basic multiplication facts mastered through the use of music
  • Literature Circles – continue building reading fluency and comprehension skills
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – read the story and tour a local chocolate factory
  • City of Portland – study its history, bridges and important landmarks
    Construct a visual display of a Portland bridge or landmark
  • All-school and classroom service projects

4TH GRADE

  • Participate in the Thanksgiving program
  • All-school and classroom service projects
  • Field trip to Salem
  • Stauffer-Will Farm field trip
  • Study the history of Oregon and write a report

5TH GRADE

  • State and Country Fair – A heightened event of the research and writing process of the state report. The students arrive dressed in attire representing their state; each student provides a sampling of food that comes from their state.
  • Science – Students participate in extensive hands-on labs and science experiments; they utilize microscopes in labs and take part in dissections.
  • Beach Trip – A fun-filled day trip to Newport, Oregon. They visit the Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center where they participate in a variety of hands-on activities. They also spend a few hours with a ranger-led tide pool exploration.

6TH GRADE

  • Outdoor Ministries School
  • States and Country Fair – participation in and preparation for a report on a country
  • Science Fair Project-presentation and experimentation of a testable science thesis

7TH GRADE

  • The Chrysalis trip – Vancouver, British Columbia as a culmination to our study of our sister country, Canada
  • The dissection of an organism – to gain a better understanding of the human digestive system
  • Science Fair Project – presentation and experimentation of a testable science thesis
  • Country Fair Project – study and exhibit of the geographical, political, and environmental areas of a South American country
  • All-school and classroom service projects

8TH GRADE

  • Oregon Food Bank – A service project field trip to the Oregon Food Bank to help pack food donations
  • Science Fair Project – An original science research project written in the master’s thesis format
  • Chrysalis Trip – A class trip to Washington, D. C. in the spring to learn more about the governmental process
  • All-school and classroom service projects
